High-visibility clothing is usually made with a fluorescent base, such as bright yellow or orange, paired with reflective strips. The fluorescent fabric enhances visibility in daylight by absorbing and re-emitting light, whilst the reflective strips bounce light back to its source. This provides excellent visibility in low-light situations or in poor weather.

Hi-vis clothing, including jackets & coats, hoodies and vests are typically made from polyester, nylon or cotton. Polyester is the most common due to its durability and moisture-wicking properties, which keep the clothing quick-drying and comfortable. Synthetic fabrics like polyester and nylon also provide insulation, making it suitable for outdoor or draughty environments.

High-visibility vests are essential for ensuring safety in high-risk environments, offering enhanced visibility to reduce the likelihood of accidents. These vests are designed to be lightweight and easy to wear over regular clothing, making them a practical choice for workers in industries such as construction, transport & logistics, and road maintenance.

High-visibility jackets share similarities with hi-vis vests but offer the added benefit of full-sleeve coverage. These jackets are specifically designed for when enhanced visibility is critical for safety. Beyond improving visibility, hi-vis jackets serve as practical outerwear, providing protection against various weather conditions, such as wind, rain and cold temperatures.

The necessity for hi-vis clothing will depend on the environment you're working in. Typically, hi-vis clothing is mandatory when working on construction site, roadside, dock, warehouse or railway. It is also recommended to wear hi-vis clothing when working in low light or poor weather conditions, or when working in large, open spaces.

Most hi vis garments have a maximum life of 20-30 washes unless otherwise stated on the label, but cleaning them too often can lead to fading. Meanwhile, dirt and stains can lessen the amount of fluorescent or reflective material that is visible, again affecting performance. By wiping them clean after each use, washing on a lower temperature and storing them safely, you will be able to maintain their quality for longer.

Our hi-vis range typically complies with standards such as EN ISO 20471 and EN471 Class 2, which specifies visibility requirements for those working in high-risk environments.

This depends on wear and tear, frequency of use and exposure to harsh conditions. As soon as the fabric or reflective strips show signs of damage or fading, it’s time for a replacement.
