Why Your Business Should Have a Defibrillator

Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) is a leading cause of death around the world. In Ireland alone, it claims the lives of 13 people every day – that’s around 5,000 lives lost each year to SCA. However, some of these lives could be saved if more people learnt CPR and how to use the First Aid equipment to hand.

SCA does not discriminate, as it can happen to anyone, even very fit and healthy people. Without immediate treatment, 90-95% of Sudden Cardiac Arrest victims will die. That’s why investing in a defibrillator for your workplace will give your team members a significantly increased chance of survival if SCA were to occur.

Why should your business have a defibrillator on site?

Every business should have at least one defibrillator because sudden cardiac arrest can happen to anyone, at any time, and having one on hand can save lives.

Sudden cardiac arrest is a leading cause of death: Sudden cardiac arrest is a serious condition that can cause the heart to stop beating, which can be fatal within minutes. Having a defibrillator on hand can help to quickly restore normal heart function and improve the chances of survival.

Time is critical: In cases of sudden cardiac arrest, every minute counts. The chances of survival decrease by 10% for every minute that passes without defibrillation. Having a defibrillator on site can reduce response times and increase the chances of a successful outcome.

Easy to use: Modern defibrillators are designed to be user-friendly and easy to operate, even by individuals without medical training. Many models feature clear, step-by-step instructions and voice prompts to guide users through the process.

Legal requirements: In some countries, it is a legal requirement for certain businesses and public spaces to have a defibrillator on site. Failure to comply with these requirements can result in fines or legal action.

Improved employee safety: Having a defibrillator on site can also help to improve employee safety and wellbeing. Knowing that a life-saving device is available can provide peace of mind to employees and may also help to attract and retain talent.

Maximise chances of survival following SCA

Construction sites and heavy industry facilities are dangerous environments with increased SCA risks, including heavy labour, electrocution, extreme weather and high stress. These increased risks mean that more protection should be offered to employees, including access to a defibrillator.

Remember that defibrillation within three minutes of an SCA will increase the chance of survival from around 5-10% to over 70%. Always have one on hand and ensure that all staff know of its location and how to use it properly.
